The Explosive Power of Intercession – 6 Truths You Need to Know

By Kim D’souza

Talk of intercession, and it is like a ‘boring’ ‘repetitive’ ‘clueless’ and ‘sordid’ part of a Christian’s life – something that seems to be forced upon by the church leaders!

Well, if the above words for intercession resonate with you, then that’s a good indication that you got it all wrong! So here we have access to such a powerful weapon whereby we can partner with God to bring heaven’s agenda on earth, but our wrong understanding of it makes it ineffective.

Intercession simply means praying for others or fighting the spiritual battle for someone else. Here are some truths about intercession that you may not be aware of:

1: You are not the mediator
The Old Testament always had a mediator like Abraham, Moses, Nehemiah, Job who prayed on behalf of others, but here is the explosive through of the new covenant – Jesus, a part of God head Himself mediates or intercedes alongside us. For there is one God and one mediator also between God and men, the man Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:5).

Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died – more than that, who was raised to life – is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Romans 8:34.

That’s why intercession is the MOST powerful and exclusive weapon of a believer’s spiritual warfare because it is done in partnership with God Himself!

2: God is holding your hand when you intercede
Remember the incident when the Amalekites attacked the Israelites and Moses, Aaron and Hur climb up a hill (Exodus 17:8-15)? As long as Moses held up his hands, Israelites were prevailing. So when Moses grew tired, Aaron and Hur held his hands up. Aaron is symbolic of the priesthood, while the name Hur implies light, which is a metaphor for the Holy Spirit.

Intercession is not a burden, it is a privilege.

Romans 8:26 says : The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us though wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

Wow! That’s not just Jesus but the Holy Spirit also, i.e two-thirds of the God head interceding with us!

3: Intercession is for every Christian
and not just for a select few. Why intercede for others? Because God in His Word commands us to! Because our faith filled words and declarations gives access to God to intervene in this earthly kingdom that is still under the dominion of the devil. We are a channel, for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.

4: Be overcome by compassion
If there was one thing that Jesus was overcome by, during his time on earth, it was pity and compassion for others. And as His disciples we need to overflow in love and compassion too. Ask God to make your heart tender, so you want to see God’s best happen in others lives. And then genuinely intercede (and don’t just say – I will pray and then never do!). Start somewhere.

It will always be easy for you to understand others who are going through what you went through, and that’s a good place to start interceding for such people.

5: We intercede according to the Word of God
As Christians, we don’t fight for victory but we fight from the place of victory. Once you get this revelation, your language of prayer will be very different. A majority of the intercessors pray or plead with the tone as if God is withholding a breakthrough! Understand the true nature of God and pray according to His Word. Search for scriptures that are a solution to an issue and start declaring them. If you are not sure what exactly to pray, start by praying in tongues.

6: Intercede with the big picture in mind
When praying for others don’t just pray for mumma, dada, job, dog, house etc. All this God can add. But pray that we would seek God and His kingdom first. Pray that disciples of Jesus would be raised. Pray that salvation would come to families. Pray that churches would be revived. Mature Christians will always trade their agenda for God’s. Pray as Jesus would pray!
