Red Alert: The King You Choose Will do this…

By Pastor Kim D’souza

Prophet Samuel warned the Israelites saying, “The king you choose over you will claim his rights…”

This was his reply when the Israelites, a nation who had God Himself to lead them, were grumbling and complaining because like other nations they wanted a King. This hurt the heart of God, and of Samuel, and then the prophet makes the above profound statement – The king you choose over you will claim his rights… (1 Samuel 8:11, NIV)

Further, he went on to say what the new king will do to them: He will take your sons and make them do the job of servants – to run in front of chariots, plough his ground, reap his harvest, make equipment. And so will he do to your daughters. He will also take the best of what you have – cattle, flocks, vineyards, fields and use them. And, in the end you yourself will end up as a slave. (1 Sam 8: 10-17).

Choose Wisely

But the people refused to listen.

You see, God himself was leading them, and yet they rejected Him over an earthly king, because they wanted to be like other nations.

Here’s the thing, you can’t serve two Kings

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other (Matt 6:24)

You cannot afford to keep your leg in two boats.

Who is your king?

Beloved, God wants to be the king of your heart. But He allows you to choose. You get to decide which king you want to surrender your life to. So many of us, believers, are struggling because we have not fully surrendered our lives to Jesus. We profess Jesus as Lord and yet our lives are not surrendered to His Lordship.

Remember no matter what you choose you get a consequence. The king over you will claim his rights. When you choose to surrender your life to Jesus, you get to reign in this life with this king. But when you yield to other kings, your hidden idols – be it your pride, religion, lust, money or addictions, they will take away all that is yours and lead you into a path of gradual destruction. From being a son, you will become a slave.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full (John 10:10)

What king or kings are you allowing to rule over your heart? Is it King Jesus? Or there are hidden areas of your heart where other kings have invaded?
