He was no different. He was a man just like us facing the same temptations, same desires, same battles. But he was the greatest of the prophets after Moses in the Old Testament. I am talking about Elijah, counted among the giants of the Bible.

There is no introduction for him in the Bible. No brief about his birth or upbringing. Only the fact that one day he just walks up to the wicked king Ahab and announces that it won’t rain except at his Word.

Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, ‘As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew, nor rain in the next few years except at my Word. (1 Kings 17:11).

And he actually shut the heavens over the land so there would be no rain for three and a half years!

What confidence and trust in God Elijah must have had to go and stand before the king and make this bold statement.

If Elijah was just like us, we can be just like him!

Many times we look at the successes of people and desire those. But we forget that every story in the Bible that  saw success beyond human strength, was birthed in intimacy with God. Every supernatural act, every decision made in the open, the very source of unshakable faith, was a overflow of God encounters in the secret place.

James 5:17 gives the key to what we saw happening in 1 Kings

Elijah prayed.

And he not simply prayed, but he prayed incessantly. And so the skies were shut at his word. And then when he prayed again and the skies opened up over the land so that the rain came again and produced the harvest.

We will not have to see the many battles and failures in our lives, if we were to spend time seeking the counsel of the Lord before making our decisions.

If Elijah was just like us, we can be just like him, especially in this respect!

Lord, bring us back to the heart of prayer…
