A Lesson from the Shoplifter
By Kim D’souza

Recently on a Sunday after church as we were having a quick bite at a Convenience Store, we saw a young well-dressed boy being reprimanded for shoplifting a packet of candies, while making his purchases.
It got me thinking – Of all the attractive groceries laid out at the store, what made him pick a small pack of candies costing lesser than a dollar?
Then I realised that it was not so much about the value of the item stolen, but the wrong habit of stealing that this boy had embraced in his life.
Habits are certain actions that are ingrained in our lives, that come naturally to us because of continued repetition. They are the things we do without thinking.
And that’s what that boy did.
Here is what you need to know: The key to success in your walk with God lies in your habits or daily routines. Habits once formed are difficult to break.
If you look at the lives of people who are considered as successful in the world’s eyes- be it in business, sports, academics etc, you will realise that one of the crucial keys to their success has been the discipline in their daily routines. Yet it is disheartening to see many believers who have the mind of Christ, but lack the discipline of maintaining good spiritual habits.
Habits shape life
One of the important habits Jesus had was talking to His heavenly Father. Luke 22:39 (TPT) says, Jesus left the upper room with his disciples and, as was his habit, went to the Mount of Olives, his place of secret prayer.
If I may ask you: List three spiritual habits that you have maintained over the last few years. And I am not talking about praying before meals, saying your night prayers or reading Our Daily Bread. These are good, but as soldiers of Christ Jesus let’s get aggressive and intentional in our habits.
Here are some of the good spiritual habits you can inculcate and keep building on:
· Have a secret place of prayer and be found in it daily.
· Talk to the Holy Spirit and pray in tongues more than touching your phone.
· Place priority on fasting at least once a week.
· Commit to serve in a spirit-filled church. On time is ‘late’ so make it a habit to go an hour early to pray and serve.
· Meditate and memorise chapters from the Word of God.
· Commit to reading spirit-filled books. Remember readers are leaders.
· Tithe beyond 10%. Give – sacrificially and radically.
· Share the Gospel and make disciples.
Be encouraged, it’s never too late to start!
