I believe there are two ways of doing something: One, simply do it and second, do it with excellence.
As children of God, we ought to be showcasing the spirit of excellence in whatever we do (2 Corinthians 8:7). As Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, Whatever your hand finds to, do it with all your might.
Excellence doesn’t mean that you need to be perfect in whatever you do. But having a spirit of excellence means giving your best – with heart, soul and mind – For the glory of God! (1 Corinthians 10:31).
Well, the good news is that the born again spirit inside of us is filled with God’s excellence. But the challenge is to renew our minds and overcome the flesh that likes to settle with mediocrity.
Here are 5 ways in which you can pursue excellence:
1. Desire for it
Be intentional about it. When I was working for the secular world as an editor of a magazine, my desire was always to excel in the work I did. So every time I would cover a story, I would work with the end goal in mind that none of the competing magazines should be able to match my work. And by God’s grace, the readers could see the difference in my work.
Consciously aim for excellence. Unless you have a desire for excellence, you will not be keen to pursue it.
2. Know that you are working for the Lord
When you keep this perspective in mind, you would want to give your best to Jesus. And this is what the word of God says in Colossians 3:23-24 – Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as (something done) for the Lord and not for men, knowing (with all certainty) that it is from the lord (and not from men) that you will receive the inheritance which is your (real) reward. (The One Whom) you are actually serving (is) the Lord Christ (the Messiah).
If we keep our minds on ultimately WHO we are serving, there will be little room for complaining, jealousy, grumbling or unrealistic expectations!
3. Do not differentiate
Some believers tend to differentiate between what they do on weekdays and what they do on Sundays. Activities like praying for people, leading bible studies, fasting or having spiritual conversations may all be honoring to God, but remember your day-to-day work itself is part of your service to Christ. God is very much interested in the way you work, the way you take care of your family or the way you live.
So if any task is worth doing, it worth doing right and diligently. Doing your tasks with excellence is a part of serving Christ and representing your living God in the world.
4. Obey God
The Bible says that Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm (Daniel 6:3). Daniel 1:8 gives the secret for his ‘excellent spirit’. Daniel walked in the ways of the Lord!
Remember obedience to God’s Word brings in an overflow of God’s grace that will cause you to automatically excel in whatever you do!
5. Be humble and have a thankful attitude
Be thankful to God for every situation in your life, knowing that He is working it all out for your good. Be humble and never stop learning. Know that it is the grace of God upon your life that causes you to triumph. This kind of attitude will set the right tone for you to excel in life.
To conclude brothers and sisters, you and I have only one life to live – let’s live it with excellence!
